Anniversary Clocks and the Values Associated with Them   no comments

Posted at 9:06 pm in Home & Family

Now, here’s yet another contraption through which one will be able to learn Christian virtues: the anniversary clock. The anniversary clock is typically given out as gifts for weddings and for married couples celebrating their wedding anniversary. So, what’s with the anniversary clock that it is deemed worthy of such purpose? Well, we could perhaps get a clear grasp of this by knowing, first and foremost, how the anniversary clock works.

How the Anniversary Clock Works

The traditional anniversary clock is a manually operated clock – meaning, one has to wound it for it to work. On the other hand, when it comes to modern anniversary clock models, one needs to program the time settings for it to work. What’s incredible about the anniversary clock is that it can work for 400 days in just one winding or programming; after which, one would have to wind or program it again. Since 400 days is just a little more days than the 365 days it takes to make one year, the early manufacturers of this clock came up with the name, anniversary clock.

When the Anniversary Clock Reminds…

Thus said, it is easy to know why anniversary clocks are often given out as wedding gifts. Aside from the idea that it reminds the couple of their wedding anniversaries, it sort of reminds them that marriage needs work to be able to withstand the test of time, and that time can really make, and not break, a marriage.

How to Make a Pinata?   no comments

Posted at 1:03 am in Home & Family

In modern times pinatas have gotten really popular objects for children’s birthday and Christmas parties. Pinatas have certainly come a long way from the initial pinatas which were clay pots rather than the paper mache structures which are so well-known today. They are fairly simple to build and can give quite a few hours of entertainment for you and your kids. As such if you are up for the challenge of making one, here is all you have to know to build a paper mache pinata by yourself.

How To Make A Pinata

Required Tools

Newspapers

Large Bowl

Scissors (optional)

Required Materials

Candy

Balloon

Masking tape/clear tape

Flour

Water

Crepe paper and streamers

Paint

String/yarn

Instructions

1. Particularly if you are working along with small children, be certain to cover your work area properly because making a pinata can be a really messy endeavor. Tear or use scissors to cut several strips of newspaper about 1-inch wide and 6-8 inches long and set them aside. Blow up the balloon and set it aside as well.

2. Then move on to the paste; in the bowl create a paste using the water and flour, heat the paste over medium heat for 3-6 minutes. The paste should start to thicken however, if it is too thick it will not work well so watch it carefully. You want the paste to be thick enough to stay in place without dripping all over the place however, at the same time it must be malleable.

3. Dip the newspaper strips you made into the paste and cover the balloon with them leaving a small hole around the area where the balloon is tied so that you may pop the balloon and take it out afterwards. Apply 3 newspaper layers to the pinata and when it is dry, deflate or pop the balloon and draw it out.

4. Now, paint your pinata in bright colors and decorate it with crepe paper, streamers and whatever else you want. Finally you need some way to hang your pinata. Make 4 small holes in the pinata around the hole you left for the balloon and run string/yarn through the holes and tie them together at the top. Now all that is left is to fill the pinata with candy and other treats, stuff or tape the hole shut and your pinata is ready for use.

Tips

When you are gluing the newspapers to the balloon it may be difficult to hold the balloon so rest the balloon in a bowl that is covered with plastic wrap to keep it in one place.

Make the surface of the newspapers as even as you can so the pinata is easier to decorate and looks smoother.

Check out a couple of the tutorials available online for tips on making your pinata in different animal shapes.

Use individually wrapped candy to fill the pinata. While bulk candy may be cheaper and more handy, keep in mind that when the pinata bursts all the candy will fall onto the floor so individually wrapped candy is recommended.
